Malibu Colony has a mixture of long-time residents and those who lease these stunning homes for a weekend or a few months at a time. Each home in the colony has private access to the pristine of beach. The colony started years ago back in the 1920s. The widow of a successful oil mogul, May Rindge, owned 27 miles of rugged coastline which is now Malibu. But back in the 20s, Malibu was almost unreachable from Los Angeles. However, after finding herself in some financial trouble May decided to agree to rent a mile of her land to Hollywood movie stars. After the agreement was made, the one-mile stretch was immediately known as Malibu Movie Colony.
However, back the 20s in the Colony consisted of tiny “homes” on the beach where celebrities enjoyed privacy away from prying eyes. It wasn’t until the 1930s that May agreed to let a select few start building real homes on the land. But throughout the years the homes have grown more and more elaborate, but you’ll notice most are confined to a 30 foot lot. Although they are built to smaller lots, these homes are upwards of 4,000 square feet and feel nothing but spacious.
